Numbers show continuing decline in youth sports participation

Posted by Kristi Gottwalt on Aug 11, 2016 9:30:00 AM

We all know that physical activity is good for the body, mind, and spirit. Team up physical activity with a sport, and kids get the benefits of exercise along with the camaraderie of a team. Accountability, dedication, and leadership are often benefits for sports participants (in addition to the fun of playing!). That's why it is disheartening that year after year, fewer American youth are participating in sports. From a Sports Illustrated article

Pokémon GO Workouts?

Posted by Kristi Gottwalt on Jul 13, 2016 9:59:12 AM

Pokémon GO is looking like the mobile app of the summer. The game has users looking for Pokémon outside of the virtual world, in their backyards and on the street. Forbes recently posted an article, Five Ways Pokémon GO Is Actually Good For You. The first reason: people have to walk to find Pokémon, and they must walk to hatch the eggs.

As the Pokémon GO craze continues, users are noticing the benefits of the exercise. This tongue-in-cheek article by Gizmodo highlights the leg pains of users who accidentally exercised. Lifehacker even designed an interval training workout based on the app.

From the fit to those who aren't as used to moving, Pokémon GO is a hit. Why? Well, exercise doesn't have to be boring. Physical activity isn't limited to running laps or cycling on a stationary bike. Making movement fun is an important part of keeping kids of all ages active.

That's why at ActivEd, Jax and Gia lead students in math, language arts, and reading lessons. Engaged students have fun, they get excited, and they pay attention–all of which helps them learn. Want to see Jax and Gia in action? Request more information on Walkabouts!

Make Long-Lasting Memories This Independence Day!

Posted by Kristi Gottwalt on Jul 4, 2016 8:00:00 AM

Independence Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. It's filled with memories of going to the lake and swimming, watching fireworks, and spending time with my family. Since I starting working at ActivEd, I've learned why my memories of the holiday are so strong. The constant physical activity literally made it easier for those memories to be set in my mind.

As an adult, I cherish memories of those who are no longer with us, and I still feel close to family members I am separated from by distance.

The team here at ActivEd hopes you can build great memories with your family and friends this July 4th. If you are looking for fun ways to get your kids moving this holiday, Realsimple.com has some great ideas.

Happy Independence Day from the ActivEd team!

Walkabouts are online adventures that transform math, language arts, and reading fundamentals into standards-based, movement-rich lessons for Pre-K through second grade students. At ActivEd, we know that kids learn more, are more engaged, and are healthier when they are active both in and out of the classroom.
